Holocrine sebaceous glands secrete sebum (whole-cell rupture) into hair follicle. Pilosebaceous unit = hair + sebaceous gland + arrector pili. Blocked + Cutibacterium-infected unit → acne vulgaris.
Labeled regions (3)
- 1Sebaceous gland
Foamy cells with pale lipid-rich cytoplasm. Whole-cell (holocrine) secretion of sebum.
- 2Hair shaft
Keratinized cylinder in the follicle. Surrounded by inner + outer root sheath.
- 3Pilosebaceous duct
Channel where sebum + dead sebocytes drain onto hair. Plug here → comedone (whitehead/blackhead).
