Description

Chondrocytes in lacunae embedded in a glassy type-II collagen matrix. Lines articular surfaces + forms respiratory rings; avascular.

Labeled regions (3)

  1. 1
    Chondrocyte in lacuna

Cell occupies a space (lacuna) within the matrix; pairs = isogenous groups (recent division).

  2. 2
    Territorial matrix

Densely basophilic halo of GAGs around each chondrocyte.

  3. 3
    Perichondrium

Dense connective tissue surrounding cartilage; source of new chondroblasts.
